LAKE SUPERIOR, APTLY NAMED

Lake Superior is a huge, rock-bound lake that boasts a lot of records and amazing data. It is the world’s largest freshwater lake, with incredible clarity – 65 to 75 feet have been recorded. It’s cold (average depth is 489 feet), though the average temp of 40 degrees has warmed up enough in recent summers to invite toe-dipping and swimming in both the Grand Marais Harbor and East Bay. At winter’s end, the lake’s movement produces high, sculptural walls of ice on shore. In summer, lake gulls soar in the clear air and announce the departure and return of fishing boats. 350 shipwrecks and 1,000 lost lives attest to the Big Lake’s power, most evident in October and November. On the other hand, June and July are months of tranquil seas. In fact, the drama of each season along Lake Superior makes every single visit unique, and always awe-inspiring.
