![]() ATV/OHVThere are wonderful forest road riding opportunities in Cook County! In 2008, the Minnesota DNR completed its road inventory, and numerous old forest roads are open to ATVers in the Pat Bayle Forest in the Gunflint/Hovland area. In May 2008, Cook County passed an ordinance allowing ATVers to ride on its gravel roads. ATVers must be licensed drivers and machines must have a left-hand rearview mirror. The opening of the county's gravel roads created some nice links between DNR and Forest Service roads. The US Forest Service recently released its OHV Travel Management Project, and maps showing where ATVers can ride are available at the Gunflint District office in Grand Marais (218-387-1750) and the Tofte District office in Tofte (218-663-8060). The Cook County ATV Club is working to create one map displaying all roads open under the assorted plans - look for it in the 2010 riding season! In the meantime, visit the ATV Club Web site at www.atv.rideupnorth.com to learn about upcoming events, safe riding (including youth programs) and public education regarding ATV use as a responsible activity. The “About Us” page lists email addresses for the club’s board members, and you may email any of them for more information. Also consider talking to local riders/ATV dealers in Grand Marais at Arrowhead Outdoor, Hwy 61 and W. 3rd Ave. (218-387-2098) and Steve’s Sports, Hwy 61 and Gunflint Trail (218-387-1835). Happy trails! For additional information, call the Grand Marais Area Tourism Association: |
